There is a similar fife at the Boston Museum :

Page 5.

Has the original tin cheater.

Features:

Length of Instrument -the fife is 16 1/8 inches.

Wood -the instrument is made of, what seems to be, Maple. There is also a bone insert at the embouchure hole.

Key of Instrument - Bb

Finger Holes -seem to be all of the same size.

The spacing on the holes is as follows:

1-2=.810
2-3=.762
3-4=.701
4-5=.752
5-6=.684

This shows that the hole pattern is not even, and there is a large space between the 1st and 2nd holes, and a small space between the 5 th and 6 th .

Swell -the swell on this instrument comes at the embouchure hole.

Ferrules - Ferrules are made of brass, and are not what I would call scored, but pressed, and not cut into the brass. The marking on the ferrules are not what I have seen on any other fifes. Both are made out of brass seam stock and are tapered. Also, both ferrules have the punch marks to keep them in place. Top ferrule is .896 in length; bottom is .651.
